Subsurface Crack Propagation from Internal Defect in Rolling Contact Fatigue of Railway Wheel Steel

نویسندگان

چکیده

Rolling contact fatigue failure is one of the main damages in railway wheels caused by cyclic rolling with rails. This internal defects such as nonmetallic inclusions or voids and may occur heavy haul freight car wheels. The subsurface crack propagation behaviors are evaluated twin-disc-type tests using test specimens artificial defects. Finite element analyses involving simulated also conducted. cracks more likely to propagate larger Moreover, initiating from trailing side faster than those leading side. Shear mode equivalent stress intensity factors obtained finite correspond well results tests. specimen models have factor ranges smaller both sides. suggest that propagations affected deformation defects, which leads higher resistance

Rolling contact fatigue in martensitic 100Cr6: subsurface hardening and crack formation

Rolling contact fatigue tests on 100Cr6 steel were carried out with a ballon-rod tester. Microstructural damage was manifested by gradual hardness changes under the subsurface, and microcracks formed adjacent to inclusions; both being evidence of plastic deformation. The hardness increase appears to be due to the development of residual stress, while the microcracks form as a result of the conc...

Analysis of Surface Crack Growth under Rolling Contact Fatigue

Understanding the fatigue crack growth phenomenon in railheads requires a study of driving forces such as the crack tip opening and sliding displacements, under repeated rolling contact. Finite element simulations, allowing elastic-plastic deformation, and mixed-mode crack growth laws were utilized to demonstrate that the fatigue crack growth rates display a minimum after a finite amount of cra...

prediction of the subsurface crack growth lifetime in railroad wheel of the iranian railway system

in the last decade, decrease of the wear rate, increase in the axel load, and the velocity of the trains have changed the main damage mechanism of railway wheels from wear to rolling contact fatigue (rcf). rcf may lead to surface and subsurface cracks. the interaction between wear and rcf, removes the surface cracks, but the subsurface crack propagate gradually, and may lead to deeper and more ...

Predicting Depth and Path of Subsurface Crack Propagation at Gear Tooth Flank under Cyclic Contact Loading

In this paper, a two-dimensional computational model is proposed for predicting the initiation position and propagation path of subsurface crack of spur gear tooth flank. In order to simulate the contact of teeth, an equivalent model of two contacting cylinders is used. The problem is assumed to be under linear elastic fracture mechanic conditions and finite element method is used for numerical...

An Ultrasonic technology Study for Subsurface Defect in Railway Wheel Tread

The subsurface defect in the wheel tread caused from Rolling Stock Fatigue (RCF) has become more danger in high speed railway. The conventional UT and phased array UT have deficiency to find the subsurface defect from the tread surface because of limitation of ultrasonic near field. In this paper, the subsurface defect is studied by simulation and experimental results with ultrasonic technique....
